New Cisco CTO says – it’s all horizontal – vertical is out.

Here is a good tidbit from a recent GigaOm post.

Updated: Ex-Moto CTO, Now CTO of Cisco Systems. Short Interview: “‘For the longest time, communication technologies have been vertical,’ she said. Video meant cable, voice meant telephone, and data translated into Ethernet. ‘It is all horizontal – now network is the platform,’ she said.”

(Via GigaOM.)

The “irony” of the network as a platform is that all the exciting opportunities are what go on top and bottom of that platform. The good news is that the IP/Ethernet platform has won. The bad news is that it’s unlikely to change much ’cause it now has to hold up the pyramid of stuff on it. It’s new role is to be “robust” 👿
