Extremely Useful — Golf Videos for Putting and Chipping

The world is falling apart, and so I’m gonna talk golf.

Here are 4 beautiful videos that illustrate the key points for putting and the basic chip/pitch.

This is for the people who’ve asked me for short game advice which I acquired during my "golf dad" days. That is I watched a lot of short game lessons given by elite coaches. In the past I had no references other than — read the Stan Utley book.

Enjoy/

The Short List

Here they are. They’re all from TXG in Toronto.

  • Ian Fraser’s Short Game Lesson with Gareth Raflewski – YouTube – 15 minutes of pure gold. Especially the spinner.
  • Live Short Game Lesson with Gareth Raflewski – YouTube – this has a ton of information. It’s long and complete. Requires a bit of patience because it is live and not edited. But it is worth it. First 30 minutes on where club strikes the ground. That includes ball position and shaft lean. Around 31 minutes Gareth talks about "picking it clean" and why we don’t want to do that. Second 30 minutes on different lies using Gareth’s "homebrew" lie boards. The starts around 42 minutes. (Very cool). The last 30 minutes is on distance control via half swing, three quarter, and full swing. Around 1:17 he talks about long arms and what I call "chicken wing" issues.
  • Putting Fundamentals with Gareth Raflewski // Instructor Series – YouTube – Matt gets alignment lesson!!! My experience of this lesson was the same. It was not subtle. The hole was not where I thought it was. I was 5 inches to right of hole on a 15 foot putt. I took that lesson around 2014 with Scott Rodgers in his old Meadow Gardens putting studio. OMG I still vividly remember the shock that my version of straight was not straight!
  • Putting Drills from the Tour with Gareth Raflewski – YouTube – Gareth walks us through drills built into his "putting matt". Super useful drills.

Quick Summary

Basic chip/Pitch

Note that when you hear Gareth go thru the basics you will likely be confused. You never heard chipping/pitching described this way. It will be a revelation.

  • ball in center
  • vertical shaft ( yes … that means no forward lean)
  • make a small version of your normal swing.
  • and the fourth point — I’ll let Gareth explain because you won’t believe me.

Putting

Watch the videos. Also, if you’re from Vancouver then you may have heard Scott Rodgers talk about this too. Scott is a Quintic Master Putter guy. He’s coached Adam Hadwin, Adam Svenson, most of Team Canada golf, and (I’m guessing) every top player in BC. Highly recommended. You can get a lesson with him. I believe he has a lesson package.
